![]() David Gangloff, Project Architect for Baum | Thornley Architects LLP (All Design Phases) SEBASTOPOL Lynmar Winery, a Russian River Valley specialist in estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay has completed a winery facility expansion including barrel aging caves. This enhanced, state-of-the-art winery incorporates the principles of gravity flow to minimize juice handling, allows maximum temperature control of fermentation tanks, and uses traditional basket presses for Pinot Noir. The new caves provide an ideal, stable environment for aging and are accessible directly from the winery structure. Lynn Fritz, an expert in global logistics and humanitarian relief efforts, and family founded Lynmar Winery in 1990 with the vision of creating world-class Pinot Noir. Lynmar's 42-acre Quail Hill Vineyard lies within one of the Russian River Valley's coolest areas, Laguna Ridge, an ideal microclimate for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The winemaking complex is nestled into the side of a hill on which the Fritz residence sits atop. By burying the bulk of the building, the impact of the structure on this rural neighborhood is minimal. Earthy colored concrete, split-face concrete block and board-and-batten wood siding blend the building into the hillside, and reflect the warmth and friendliness for which the Russian River Valley is known. A fabric canopy structure shades the rooftop, where grapes are crushed, pressed and fermented.
